You can manually adjust self adjusting brakes like the part # K23-478-479 that you referenced. You basically just use the access port on the back of the assembly to move the star wheel to the desired tightness. The linkage for the self-adjusting hardware will partially obstruct access but it is possible to get in there far enough to make the adjustment as I've done it before. Therefore, you don't have to mess with any drawstrings.
